These pages have been designed to make sure that everyone has access to the full content, regardless of the user agent (browser) they use.
Your browser does not import Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), the standard for web page style and layout. So you can see (or hear) the content, but it will not look pretty. With style, the pages would look something like this screenshot (reduced size).
The latest version of popular browsers is most easily obtained from PC magazine cover disks. Note that an upgrade of Internet Explorer may attempt to upgrade Windows system files and functions.

This three column layout looks great in MS Internet Explorer v6. But it is completely broken in other browsers, notably Mozilla and Firefox, and IE7. But these browsers are more standard compliant than IE6. So what is going on? IE6 interprets some sloppy CSS and XHTML coding in a way that actually helps the web designer, but not the way the standards prescribe. On the other side, Mozilla plugs in certain default values for attributes not specified in the CSSS. These defaults break the design. The lesson is to set every attribute to a determinate value.
This remains a work in progress and a better version is in the lab. However, the tangle of incompatibilities and unexpected behaviours is such that some ideals and some bells and whistles will fall by the wayside.
This area is intended to scroll to provide room for a number of stories. The rest of the page is meant to stay static, at least while it is big enough to display the full length of the menu and diary. Try reducing the size of your Window and see what happens. If all is well, all elements should stay in place, but shrink. Similarly, you can use the browser's View/Text Size feature to increase or decrease your preferred font size and the sections should adjust automatically to accomodate the new size. These features meet some accessibility concerns. Further accessibility is designed in through the use of CSS (cascading style sheets). These ensure that no formating commands are embedded in the content. Browsers are free to ignore the stylesheets and impose their own formatting. This site should therefore be equally accessible to screen readers and braille readers. They may not render the layout, but the full content will be available and still be structured in a way that makes sense.
The School button would change the heading of this column to School and then show a number of items like this one with text taken from the prospectus.
The School menu button would also reveal a sub-menu with choices such as results, Ofsted, and Policies
The Gallery button would give access to a display of our children's work in a format yet to be determined. It would be nice to arrange the work so that learning and growth can be demonstrated. In defiance of web conventions, we might create a horizontal scrolling area to mimic the timeline, and such that at least two items of work can be viewed side by side.
Children in Year 5 have been learning about the rainforest.
The News button would change the column heading to News and display a number of items taken from the latest school newsletter. The date of this newletter to be shown below the News heading. A sub menu is not planned, but the footer of the column would give access to Recent News, Press coverage, and Education News
This would give access to all downloadable materials, such as the prospectus, school policies, inspection report, recent news letters, etc.
The Area button would give access to information about Harold Wood and the local area. Much of the detail would come from hyper links to external pages
This would give access to a categorised collection of external links - including those embedded in other pages on the site. We also intend to have a News stream providing continually updated links to education or Newsround stories. We also aim to make Google or another search engine available here.
